The Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia has announced the upcoming exhibition “Waffle House Vistas,” featuring the works of photographer Micah Cash.
What is the Waffle House Vistas exhibition?
Opening August 24 and running through June 1, 2025, the exhibition explores the unique and beloved culture of Waffle House restaurants through a series of striking photographs.
Cash began taking these unique photos in 2018. His photos, taken at various restaurant locations, formed the basis of a popular book published by the Bitter Southerner.
Now those “Waffle House Vistas” paintings will be on display at the museum, “plus a newly commissioned time-based work on the same theme,” the Georgia Museum of Art said in an email press release.
Why Waffle House?
Waffle House, an iconic Southern eatery, was founded in 1955 in Avondale Estates, Georgia. The chain is known for its distinctive 1960s globe lamps and red leather seating.
“At its best, Waffle House provides a sense of belonging that most other places don’t,” Cash said in the email. “Waffle House doesn’t care how much you’re worth, what you look like, where you’re from, your political views, or where you’ve been, as long as you respect Waffle House’s unwritten rules: be kind, be respectful, and don’t stay too long when others are waiting for a table. Plus, everyone who has ever set foot in a Waffle House has a story to tell.”
In addition to the exhibition, the museum also houses:
- A workshop on smartphone photography on August 24th from 2 to 4 p.m.
- The museum’s autumn open day on 21 September from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- A lecture by artist Micah Cash on September 26th at 5:30 p.m.
- Student Night on 26 September from 6 to 8 p.m.
