Clocks go back at the end of summer time

August is coming to a close and summer is coming to an end. When temperatures drop below 90 degrees, it is time to think about the end of Summertime.

This year, the clocks will go back as usual on Sunday, November 3, which means the days will be shorter. Opinions vary on this approach, but the benefit is that we’ll all get an extra hour of sleep.

Pennsylvania could be the first to abolish daylight saving time

Pennsylvania residents may soon be finished with Summertime in total. Back in April 2021, the state’s House of Representatives passed a bill by a narrow majority of 103 to 98 votes that could lead to permanent daylight saving time and abolish the twice-yearly time changes.

Why should daylight saving time be introduced permanently?

  • Energy savings: Studies suggest that maintaining daylight saving time all year round could save energy.
  • Fewer traffic accidents: The disruption caused by the time change is linked to an increase in traffic accidents. If the time stays the same, this increase could decrease.
  • Reduced crime rate: More daylight in the evening could help reduce crime.
  • Healthier lifestyle: A permanent time change could lead to better health habits.

Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, who sponsored the bill, called the time change “inefficient and outdated.” He believes there is growing support for a permanent time change, and he wants Pennsylvania to lead the way.

A growing national movement

Pennsylvania is not alone in this push. National Conference of State Parliaments (NCSL) has reported over 650 bills and proposals across the United States aimed at implementing year-round daylight saving time.

Pending the passage of a new law, Daylight Saving Time is scheduled to end this year on Sunday, November 3. Whether this will be the last time Pennsylvania residents change their clocks remains to be seen, but the trend is clear: Many are ready for a permanent change.
