Waitrose is the first supermarket to introduce free range cream in some of its own brands. With this latest launch, the supermarket continues to be a leader in animal welfare and strives for the best standards in food production.
The free range cream range includes single, double, whipping and extra thick cream in Waitrose Essentials and Waitrose’s own brand.
Rachel Aldridge, milk buyer at Waitrose, said: “After successfully launching free range milk a few years ago, we knew we could and should take on the challenge of expanding our offering to include free range cream. We are proud to be the first supermarket to do this and hope that others will follow our example.”
What makes it free range?
All of our dairy cows are free-range. Two years ago, we enhanced our existing commitment to animal welfare with a commitment that all of our dairy cows would spend at least 183 days a year on pasture.
Our farmers leave the gates open throughout the spring and summer to give all of our dairy cows the freedom to either go outside or, if they prefer, stay inside.
Unfortunately, it is estimated that a fifth of the UK’s dairy herds are kept indoors all year round, but we know that access to the outdoors is crucial to the wellbeing of our cows.
Jake Pickering, senior farming manager at Waitrose, said: “At Waitrose, we are constantly challenging ourselves and pushing the boundaries of animal welfare across our range. By working with our dairy farmers and suppliers to introduce free range cream, we can offer our customers the best products while continuing to deliver higher animal welfare standards.”
The products will be on shelves from August 26th and can be ordered online at Waitrose.com.
